Umodzi Party Leader dismisses defections from Tonse Administration as opportunistic

The leader of the Umodzi Party, a constituent party within the Tonse administration, has downplayed recent defections from the ruling coalition, suggesting that many defectors are merely seeking personal gain. Kaumba’s comments came in the wake of announcements from UTM and PP leaders regarding their departures from the administration.

Kaumba reaffirmed his party’s commitment to President Chakwera’s administration, praising its inclusive approach to development. He highlighted improvements such as the increased availability of fuel, which he believes signals Malawi’s potential for prosperity. Additionally, Kaumba commended Chakwera’s efforts in addressing the serious issue of albino killings and abductions.

Despite the recent political shifts, Kaumba expressed confidence in his party’s readiness to confront the upcoming general elections, should the MCP decide to leave the coalition rather than join other alliances he perceives as lacking vision
