In a bold move signaling a shift in its political strategy, the United Transformation Movement (UTM) has instructed its members to disengage from participating in any government-related activities. This directive, articulated by UTM spokesperson Felix Njawala, follows concerns about the involvement of party members in government functions while wearing UTM regalia.
At a press conference held in Blantyre, Njawala emphasized that UTM now operates independently from the current government. The party’s decision to sever ties is a response to the perceived blurring of lines between party and government roles, particularly regarding recent events organized by UTM President Dr. Mikeal Usi.
“UTM has decided to stand on its own,” Njawala declared. “There is no business between the party and the government at this point.”
In addition to this strategic realignment, UTM has announced plans for a party convention scheduled for October 17, 2024. This convention will be a pivotal event where all party positions will be up for election, reflecting a comprehensive reevaluation of leadership roles within the party.
UTM Secretary General Patricia Kaliati further elaborated on the party’s new direction, indicating that future considerations for party positions will focus on loyalty and official membership status. “We will only consider those who have shown loyalty to UTM and have been officially received into the party,” Kaliati stated. She also noted that UTM would release an official statement outlining its position and future actions.
Adding to the party’s agenda, Penjani Kalua, the UTM Youth Director, highlighted the forthcoming registration drive. The party aims to register over two million members by December. This effort will be accompanied by various activities, including arts and cultural festivals across the country, designed to engage and expand the party’s base.
The recent developments suggest a period of significant transformation for UTM as it navigates its role and strategy in the political landscape. The party’s commitment to independence and robust membership drives will likely shape its future trajectory in the coming months
