Malawi second tier football team Nyambadwe United has appreciated in a special way a set of uniform they received from Tunisia-based company Afrofashions by beating Mighty Tigers Reserve 2-1 in the ThumbsUp Southern Region Football League.
The team, whose tagline is Yesu Amakukonda, donned the K1.5million-worth uniform for the first time in the match at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre after the fashion designing company’s Malawian co-founder and head designer Mehmuna Ibrahim Schumann presented it to the team’s technical director Tony Fletcher last weekend.
“This win is a special dedication to Afrofashions for giving us this beautiful football jersey set. It could be very absurd to lose while wearing such a beautiful uniform for the first time,” he said.
With the latest result, Nyambadwe United is third in the 12-team Group B on inferior goal difference as they are tied on 30 points with second-placed Mighty Wanderers after 17 games apiece. FCB Nyasa Big Bullets top the table with 31 points after playing a game less.
Nyambadwe is sponsored by a Christian organisation called Echo Africa, which distributes Bibles, conduct pastoral training and other programs. Fletcher said they use football as a tool of evangelism.
