Political analysts are warning that Malawi may experience similar political unrest to Mozambique if political stakeholders resist change and evade a transparent electoral process ahead of the 2025 elections.
Political expert Vincent Rangel emphasized the need for Malawi to engage all stakeholders and resolve any doubts surrounding the electoral process to avoid a situation like the ongoing turmoil in Mozambique. He stressed that inclusive dialogue and a commitment to transparency are key to maintaining peace and stability.
“Malawi must learn from Mozambique, where the refusal to embrace change and the lack of a transparent process has led to chaos. Stakeholder involvement is essential to avoid such outcomes,” Rangel said.
Echoing Rangel’s sentiments, another political analyst, Victor Chipofya, pointed out that Mozambique’s current unrest stems from the actions of leaders attempting to resist change and undermine the will of the people, a trend common in many African nations.
“Mozambique’s situation is a direct result of leaders who challenge democratic transitions and ignore the will of the electorate. Malawi should be cautious not to follow that path,” Chipofya stated.
In response to concerns raised by political parties, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja today reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability throughout the electoral process. She assured the public that MEC would ensure fair and credible elections in 2025.
Meanwhile, in Mozambique, opposition presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane has declared himself the winner before the official results are announced, accusing the military of gunning down his supporters and alleging widespread election rigging. The political tension in Mozambique is escalating as the country awaits the official election results this Friday.
With these developments in mind, analysts are urging Malawi’s political leaders to act decisively to safeguard the integrity of the upcoming elections.
