The number of individuals who have expressed interest in contesting for the presidency in the upcoming September elections has reached 22, following the submission of nomination documents by independent candidate Thokozani Manyika Banda.
Banda joins a growing list of aspirants hoping to lead Malawi, with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) continuing to receive submissions from interested candidates.
The process of collecting and submitting the expression of interest forms began on Tuesday and is expected to conclude on Wednesday, 30th July 2025.

According to MEC, the deadline marks the end of the initial phase of the nomination process, ahead of the thorough screening and vetting of candidates who will appear on the presidential ballot.
The growing number of contenders reflects heightened political activity and public interest in the upcoming polls, which are expected to be highly competitive.
MEC has since urged all aspiring candidates to ensure they meet the required criteria and submit their documents within the set timeframe to avoid disqualification.
