In a powerful statement addressing the political landscape in Malawi, Dr. Jack Banda has voiced his concerns regarding the recent arrest of UTM CEO Dr. Patricia Kaliati, also known as Akweni. In his message, Dr. Banda called on the United Transformation Movement (UTM), the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), the United Democratic Front (UDF), and the People’s Party (PP) to recognize the growing threats posed by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) under President Lazarus Chakwera.
Dr. Banda emphasized the need for a unified response against what he perceives as the MCP’s destructive tactics, labeling the party as “evil” and suggesting it attracts individuals lacking integrity and education. He referenced the historical context of Malawi’s political landscape to underscore his assertions, stating, “History backs this up.”
Critically, he highlighted the consequences of UTM’s alliance with the MCP, arguing that the partnership has led to disastrous outcomes, particularly for Vice President Saulos Chilima. “The worst mistake Chilima made was to join hands with MCP and Chakwera, despite repeated warnings about the dangers of entering such an alliance,” Dr. Banda asserted. He attributed the demise of Chilima’s political standing to his alignment with the Hi5 judgment, which Dr. Banda described as “immoral and against God.”
The arrest of Dr. Kaliati, who has been accused of conspiracy against President Chakwera, was portrayed by Dr. Banda as part of a larger manipulative strategy aimed at vilifying UTM and positioning Chakwera as a victim. He suggested that the circumstances surrounding Kaliati’s arrest reflect a concerted effort to shift public perception and undermine UTM’s credibility.
Dr. Banda cautioned that while individuals like Manganya may play a role in these political maneuvers, they are likely being used as pawns in a more extensive scheme orchestrated by the MCP. He urged opposition parties to remain vigilant and coordinated, emphasizing that the struggle against the MCP’s tactics will not be easy.
“Chakwera will be removed, but it won’t be easy,” he declared, pointing to the organizational strength of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the power of collective action among opposition forces. “We must consider working together, as MCP will likely use arrests and violence as strategies to maintain control.”
He concluded his statement with a call to action, urging parties to ensure Dr. Kaliati remains active and supported on the ground, likening her situation to that of former Anti-Corruption Bureau director Martha Chizuma during her arrest.
“Pepani Akweni,” Dr. Banda expressed, signaling solidarity with Kaliati amid the challenges facing UTM. He emphasized that UTM appears to be facing relentless attacks from various angles, using what he termed “capital” weapons, a metaphor suggesting the political and systemic forces at play against the party.
As tensions rise within the Malawian political sphere, Dr. Banda’s message resonates as a rallying cry for unity among opposition parties to confront the challenges posed by the ruling MCP. His call for collaboration underscores the urgent need for a strategic response to the evolving political dynamics in the country.
