The Malawi Assembly of God Eagles Cathedral in Area 47 has urged people to embrace the heart of blessing elderly people with the little things they own.
Speaking with the media after the church service on Sunday in Lilongwe, Men’s Director for the Malawi Assembly of God Eagles Cathedral in Area 47, Richard Tseka, underscored the need for caring and supporting elderly people in society.
This came after visiting the Mai Mbambande Foundation, the previous day and being touched by the challenges the elderly face.
“Whatever we have, let’s try to help our elderly people. By helping elderly people, you receive your blessing, and you miss your blessing if you neglect your parents,” Tseka said.
He shared his feelings after visiting the Mai Mbambande Foundation and listening to the stories of elderly people. He highlighted that, given the magnitude of the challenges, they decided to invite the elderly to the Sunday service and bless them with something.
He said blessing parents is just an appreciation of the role they played for the younger generation.
“We were deeply moved when we visited their foundation yesterday. It was our first time there, and what we saw touched us. We felt we could not stay silent; we had to do something.
“We went there with a small number of gifts, not knowing the magnitude of the problems they face and the number of people they are hosting. We thought it would be good to invite them to our church so that they can bless the young people. When God blesses us, it is because of them,” he said.
Founder and Executive Director for Mai Mbambande Foundation, Deborah Mbale outlined challenges elderly people face as factors spiked her to establish an elderly home known as Mai Mbambande Foundation.
“As people are growing, they face a lot of challenges and one of them is dementia, especially in villages where people do not understand what dementia is about. The health issues are related to dementia and in return, people accuse these old people as witches and wizards.
“So now care is one of the challenges that elderly people go through, so that is why as Mai Mbambande Foundation, we thought it wise to establish an elderly home that will be taking care of these neglected people and putting them together as one family,” Mbale said.
She further said they depend on farming apart from well-wisher’s support to sustain their livelihood.
One of the elderly people from Dzama 2 village in Traditional Authority Chitukula, Grace Kathelere hailed the great role Mai Mbambande is playing for their survival, highlighting that her son and daughter fail to give her care, instead they call her a witch.
“I have decided to stay with Mai Mbambande because of lacking peace in my own home. I was lacking care, but Mai Mbambande has helped us a lot. My daughter-in-law and son even did not give me food, because they think I am a witch,” Kathelere said.
