In a significant move to enhance security for refugees and host communities, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has urged police officers in Dowa District to carry out their duties with diligence, integrity, and dedication. This call was made by UNHCR Country Representative Modeste Kouame during a handover ceremony for a newly donated Toyota Hilux vehicle, which aims to improve mobility for patrols at Dzaleka Refugee Camp and its surrounding areas.
The donation is part of UNHCR’s ongoing commitment to ensure the safety and security of refugees, asylum seekers, and local community members in the region. During the ceremony, Kouame emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between law enforcement and humanitarian organizations in creating a safe environment for all. He expressed confidence that the new vehicle would greatly facilitate police operations, allowing for more effective monitoring and support in the Dzaleka area.
Chief Security Officer of Dzaleka, Serial Ghambi, expressed gratitude for UNHCR’s generous contribution. He highlighted that the donation would significantly enhance their ability to conduct smooth and efficient patrols, ultimately improving the security landscape for both refugees and local residents. Ghambi’s remarks underscore the vital role that community partnerships play in addressing security concerns and fostering a harmonious coexistence between refugees and host communities.
As challenges surrounding refugee safety and community relations persist, the collaboration between UNHCR and local law enforcement represents a proactive approach to ensuring that all individuals within the Dzaleka region feel secure and supported. This initiative not only bolsters police capabilities but also reinforces the UNHCR’s commitment to protecting vulnerable populations in Malawi and ensuring that their rights are upheld.
The handover ceremony serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for dedicated action in the face of complex humanitarian challenges, and the collaborative spirit necessary to address these issues effectively.
