As the debate surrounding Prophet Shepherd Bushiri’s extradition to South Africa intensifies, it’s essential to consider the potential consequences of such a decision.
In my opinion, Bushiri should not be extradited to face charges in South Africa.
The manner in which the South African courts, government, and media treated Bushiri during his initial arrest is a clear indication that he will not receive a fair trial.
Despite being merely a suspect, he was treated like a convicted criminal, raising concerns that he will face persecution rather than prosecution if extradited.
As a nation, it’s crucial that we protect our citizens, especially those who have made significant contributions to the country.
Prophet Bushiri has invested millions in charity work, supporting vulnerable Malawians and creating jobs through his investments. His contributions to the country’s development cannot be overstated.
Moreover, considering the treatment of foreigners in South Africa, it’s reasonable to fear for Bushiri’s safety. If extradited, there’s a real risk that he might not return alive.
In light of these concerns, it’s imperative that we prioritize Prophet Bushiri’s safety and well-being. As his motherland, Malawi has a responsibility to protect him from potential persecution.
