Patrick Mabedi, the immediate past head coach of Malawi’s national football team, the Flames, has enlisted the services of Kanyenda, Makiyi & Associates to handle legal matters related to his employment relationship with the Football Association of Malawi (FAM). This development comes just a week after Mabedi was dismissed as coach, following a string of disappointing performances by the national team in various competitions.
David Kanyenda, a prominent private lawyer, confirmed that his firm has been retained by Mabedi to represent him in his dispute with FAM. “We have received and accepted instructions from Mr. Patrick Mabedi to represent him in respect of matters concerning his employment relationship with FAM,” Kanyenda stated.
The nature of the dispute revolves around Mabedi’s entitlements, which he claims have not been fully honored by FAM. Kanyenda has warned that unless FAM settles Mabedi’s outstanding salaries and benefits, they will be left with no choice but to take legal action. However, Kanyenda has yet to disclose the exact amount his client is seeking from the football body.
Mabedi’s dismissal has ignited conversations about how FAM manages its relationships with coaching staff, especially after poor results. His termination came amid heavy criticism of the Flames’ performance, which led to calls for change in leadership. Nonetheless, the unresolved financial matters between Mabedi and FAM have placed additional strain on the situation.
FAM’s General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, has expressed surprise over the matter, stating that he was unaware of any claims or legal action initiated by Mabedi. “I am not aware of the details, but I hope that this issue can be resolved amicably,” Gunda said. His comments raise questions about the communication channels within FAM, particularly regarding the treatment of outgoing staff members.
Amidst the ongoing dispute, FAM has moved quickly to appoint Kalisto Pasuwa, the head coach of FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, as the interim coach for the Flames. Pasuwa will lead the team in upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Burundi and Burkina Faso, scheduled for next week. This appointment is seen as a necessary step for the national team as they prepare for these crucial matches.
As the legal proceedings unfold, it remains to be seen whether FAM will resolve the matter with Mabedi outside of court or whether the dispute will escalate. The outcome could have significant implications for how FAM handles coaching contracts and terminations in the future. For now, Mabedi’s legal battle has cast a shadow over the Flames’ preparations for the AFCON qualifiers, as both parties seek to secure their respective interests.
