AFORD deploys “strongmen” to counter demonstration violence

By Burnett Munthali

The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) party has taken a bold stance on upcoming protests by deploying what it describes as strong and resolute “guardians” to prevent any disturbances caused by individuals notorious for instigating chaos. These men, known for their ability to maintain order, have been selected to ensure peaceful protests, where participants can safely express their views without fear of violence.

This decision follows reports that some individuals, described locally as “akhakhakha” (troublemakers) and “atombolombo otosa anzawo” (instigators), have been preparing to disrupt tomorrow’s demonstrations. AFORD’s intervention is a precautionary measure, aiming to protect the right of Malawians to voice their opinions freely while avoiding any unnecessary conflict or destruction.

The party has clarified that these “guardians” are not there to threaten or intimidate anyone but to deter those who might intend to provoke or engage in acts of violence. The men selected are known for their firm, no-nonsense approach and will ensure that demonstrations remain peaceful and respectful of public property.

AFORD leadership has also warned those planning to participate in the protests to be vigilant and stay safe, advising everyone against taking unnecessary risks. “This is not an event for reckless behavior or stirring up trouble,” said an AFORD representative. “We have coordinated with local security to maintain a secure environment, so any attempts to disrupt the event will be met with a swift response.”

The party remains dedicated to promoting a culture of peaceful assembly and constructive dialogue and hopes this will send a strong message against protest-related violence. With security tight and an emphasis on lawful conduct, tomorrow’s demonstrations are anticipated to proceed safely and orderly.
