The Malawi Government, in partnership with global tech giant Huawei Technologies, has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to construct smart villages across the country — starting with the first project underway in rural Lilongwe.
Minister of Information, Moses Kunkuyu, confirmed the development today, highlighting that the smart village concept is aimed at electrifying and digitalizing underserved communities. He noted that the pilot project is nearing completion and is expected to be officially launched soon.

“The government is committed to ensuring that no Malawian is left behind in the digital era,” said Kunkuyu. “This pilot smart village will not only bring electricity and internet to people’s homes but also transform key public institutions such as schools and health facilities.”
As part of the initiative, Huawei has installed a solar power plant at Mbununu Village to supply sustainable electricity to Mbununu Primary School, the local clinic, and a community market. The tech company is also equipping the school with advanced digital tools, including idealHub devices and a digital blackboard, to improve learning outcomes and bridge the digital divide.
This smart village initiative aligns with Malawi 2063 (MW2063), the country’s long-term vision that seeks to position Malawi as an inclusive, industrialized, upper-middle-income nation by the year 2063.
