Malawi Leaders Unite Against Pre-Election Violence

MHRC Calls for Peaceful Assembly and Fair Elections

Growing Concerns Over Electoral Violence–Experts

In a strong show of unity, leaders of Malawi’s opposition parties, including Dr. Joyce Banda, Professor Peter Mutharika, and Dr. Bakili Muluzi, have jointly condemned the recent violence that marred demonstrations in Lilongwe on November 13, 2024.

They urged the Inspector General of Police to take immediate action against the perpetrators.

The opposition leaders emphasized that peaceful demonstrations are a constitutional right, and the government has a duty to protect peaceful demonstrators.

They also urged the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to ensure a level playing field for all political parties and to prevent violence.

In a media statement, the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has also expressed concern over the increasing wave of electoral violence, with incidents recorded in Chikwawa, Mponela, and Lilongwe.

It said this trend is alarming, as it threatens the very foundation of Malawi’s democracy.

Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu stated that the government wants the Malawi Police Service to investigate the violence and that President Lazarus Chakwera is committed to upholding the rule of law.

However, Kunkuyu also noted that the former heads of state should condemn violence against Malawi Congress Party members.

Good governance expert, Wonderful Mkhutche stressed the importance of peaceful elections and the need for political leaders to promote non-violent campaigns.

“The condemnation of violence by opposition leaders is a positive step, but it’s crucial that all parties commit to peaceful elections,” said Mkhutche.

“The government must also ensure that the electoral process is transparent and fair to prevent tensions.”

As Malawi prepares for next year’s elections, it’s essential that leaders prioritize peaceful and democratic processes to ensure the country’s stability.
