Former President Joyce Banda, leader of the People’s Party (PP), faced a significant setback today as heavy rains and deteriorated roads forced her to cancel a political rally at Makanjira in Mangochi. The region, already struggling with infrastructure damage caused by previous floods, proved impassable for Banda and her team.
Instead, the former president redirected her campaign efforts to Lungwena Trade Center, where she addressed her supporters. Banda used the opportunity to emphasize the importance of voter registration ahead of the elections, scheduled to commence in the district on November 28. She called on citizens to elect leaders with genuine concern for the country’s welfare, pointing to current economic challenges as a lesson in leadership failures.
“Our country has faced tremendous economic hardships under the present administration. This is why it’s crucial to vote for leaders who prioritize the needs of the people,” Banda said.
Despite the challenges, People’s Party officials ensured that the campaign efforts continued at Makanjira Trading Center. Director of Women Beatrice Mwale and Secretary General Ben Chakhame took charge, addressing the crowd in Banda’s absence. The gathering was further enlivened by popular artist Gibo Pearson, who performed to entertain the audience.
