As the world marks the 16 Days of Activism, the Girl Empowerment Network (GENET) intensifies its efforts to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Malawi, promoting a culture of respect, equality, and empowerment for all.
Speaking in an interview with Investigation Media Limited, Executive Director for GENET, Faith Phiri, Malawi, like many other countries globally, grapples with the pervasive issue of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), which affects millions of women and girls.
She said 1 in 3 women in Malawi experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.
She added that addressing GBV requires a multi-faceted approach, involving community engagement, policy advocacy, and support for survivors.
“We participate in various activities aimed at raising awareness about GBV and promoting community action. These initiatives include storytelling sessions, community dialogues, and advocacy campaigns targeting policymakers and community leaders.
“We are l engaging men and boys in GBV prevention. We believe that men and boys play a critical role in preventing GBV by challenging harmful gender norms, promoting gender equality, and acting as allies in the fight against violence,” she said.
Phiri added that to sustain their efforts beyond the 16 Days of Activism, they collaborate with other organizations, government agencies, and community groups.
She said: “The network recognizes that addressing GBV requires a collective response, leveraging the strengths and resources of various stakeholders.”
“Our message to the public, particularly to young girls and women, during the 16 Days of Activism is one of empowerment and hope.
“You have the right to live free from violence, fear, and discrimination.”
“Your voice matters, and your dreams are valid. Speak out against GBV and know that you are not alone—there are people and resources ready to support you.”
As Malawi joins the global community in commemorating the 16 Days of Activism, GENET’s efforts serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of collective action in ending GBV.
