Lucky Mbewe questions President Chakwera’s transparency over Chilima plane crash inquiry

By Burnett Munthali

Social commentator Lucky Mbewe has expressed skepticism regarding President Lazarus Chakwera’s directive to make the findings of the Saulos Chilima Plane Crash Inquiry public before the report is officially submitted to him.

President Chakwera’s decision has drawn mixed reactions, with Mbewe questioning the integrity of the move. According to Mbewe, the President may already be privy to the report’s details despite the publicized gesture of transparency.

“This sounds like a joke. I suspect it’s only political, as he might have already known the contents of the inquiry,” Mbewe remarked, suggesting that the directive could be a calculated attempt to manage public perception.

The Commission of Inquiry, chaired by Justice Jabbar Alide, was tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of former Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others.

Justice Alide has confirmed that the report will be made public this evening, in line with the President’s instructions, before being formally presented to Chakwera.

While some view this move as a step towards accountability, critics like Mbewe argue that it may undermine the inquiry’s credibility if it is perceived as politically motivated. As the nation awaits the report’s release, many hope it will shed light on the incident and provide answers to the pressing questions surrounding the crash.
