In a heartwarming gesture of support for the victims of Cyclone Freddy, the Joyce Banda Foundation on Sunday handed over 15 newly constructed houses to survivors from Traditional Authority Namavi in Mangochi District. This initiative is part of the foundation’s ongoing effort to provide relief and shelter to those whose homes were destroyed by the devastating cyclone earlier this year.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Timothy Sandram, a representative of the Joyce Banda Foundation, highlighted that this is just the beginning of their commitment to aiding affected communities. “We are ready to build more houses, but we are waiting for traditional leaders to identify suitable land in the targeted areas. Once this is done, we will continue our work,” he stated.

To date, the Joyce Banda Foundation has contracted over 100 houses for Cyclone Freddy survivors across the country. This effort reflects the foundation’s dedication to addressing the pressing housing needs of those displaced by the cyclone.

One of the beneficiaries, Lyner Twaibu, expressed her relief and gratitude for the new home. “We are eight in our family, and we were scattered by the cyclone. Now we will be able to live like a family once again,” she said, emphasizing the emotional and physical toll the disaster had taken on her family.

Cyclone Freddy, which struck earlier this year, left thousands of families homeless across Malawi, particularly in southern regions like Mangochi. The Joyce Banda Foundation’s intervention is a welcome relief for many who continue to struggle with the aftermath of the disaster.
