VP Dr. Michael Usi fails to respond to interview on UTM nomination process

By Burnett Munthali

Vice President Dr. Michael Usi has not responded to an exclusive interview request sent to him between November 5 and December 22, 2024. The interview sought to address critical developments within the United Transformation Movement (UTM) following the controversial closure and subsequent extension of the party’s nomination process.

The questionnaire, which included 15 comprehensive questions, aimed to clarify Dr. Usi’s position on the party’s presidential nomination process and his reasons for not submitting his papers. The questions also sought his perspective on the leadership dynamics within the UTM and the party’s preparedness for the upcoming elections.

Key issues raised in the unanswered interview

1) Non-Submission of Candidacy Papers
Dr. Usi’s decision not to submit his nomination papers for the presidential candidacy has left party members and supporters puzzled. The public had anticipated his candidacy, viewing him as a strong contender.

2) Extended Nomination Process
The party’s decision to extend the nomination process after its initial closure has raised questions about internal dynamics and transparency. The interview sought to understand Dr. Usi’s opinion on this decision and its implications for the party.

3) Impact on UTM Leadership
Dr. Usi’s absence from the presidential race has sparked debates about the future of UTM’s leadership and its potential impact on the party’s electoral prospects.

4) Reaction to Nominated Candidates
The interview also sought Dr. Usi’s views on the candidates who successfully filed their nominations, including Dalitso Kabambe, Matthews Mtumbuka, Patricia Kaliati, and Newton Kambala.

Dr. Usi’s failure to respond to these pertinent questions has raised concerns among UTM members and the public. His silence leaves many unanswered questions regarding his role in the party and the reasons behind key decisions affecting its future.

As a senior leader and a central figure in Malawi’s political landscape, Dr. Usi’s insights were expected to provide clarity and direction to UTM supporters and the broader public. His decision not to engage with the media has left a void in understanding the party’s internal processes.

The lack of response from Dr. Usi underscores the need for greater transparency and communication within the UTM. As the party prepares for the 2025 elections, the leadership must address these issues to maintain public confidence and unity within its ranks.

Malawi Freedom Network will continue to follow this story closely and provide updates on any developments. Dr. Usi is still welcome to share his perspective, as his voice is critical to shaping the narrative surrounding the UTM and its future.
