Christmas Day in Lilongwe’s CCDC residential area turned into a nightmare for residents and passersby as over 50 masked children, armed with panga knives, unleashed terror on December 25, 2024.
Reports indicate that the gang, believed to have come from the nearby Kaliyeka location, targeted innocent people in the area, robbing them of phones, cash, and clothing. In some instances, victims were stripped of their belongings to such an extent that they were left wearing only their underwear or boxers, forced to walk home in humiliation.
Eyewitnesses described the attackers as organized and ruthless. The group moved in coordinated fashion, leaving victims defenseless and in fear for their lives. “They didn’t care who you were; they just wanted everything you had,” one shaken resident said.
The incident has left the CCDC community in disbelief and distress. Families who were out celebrating Christmas were caught off guard, with many vowing to take extra security measures in the future.
Preliminary reports suggest that the young thugs hail from Kaliyeka, a densely populated area in Lilongwe. The motives behind the attack remain unclear, but some residents speculate that poverty, lack of employment, and limited opportunities could be fueling such brazen acts of violence.
Authorities have yet to confirm the identity of the culprits, but police investigations are underway. Community leaders in Kaliyeka have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement to help curb similar incidents in the future.

The use of children in organized crime and violence mirrors recent events where political thugs, notably associated with the MCP, harassed peaceful demonstrators at Lilongwe Community Ground. The lack of accountability for such acts only emboldens others to follow suit. Without firm legal deterrents or enforcement of existing laws, the cycle of violence and lawlessness risks spiraling out of control.
The Christmas Day horror has raised serious questions about the state of security in Lilongwe. Experts are urging the government and stakeholders to prioritize youth engagement in productive activities, address unemployment, and ensure access to quality education. These measures can reduce the allure of crime for the younger generation.
Law enforcement agencies are also being called upon to strengthen their presence in residential areas, especially during the festive season when communities are most vulnerable.
