In a statement marking the close of 2024, George Chaponda, leader of Malawi’s opposition parties, has warned that the country will face significant challenges in the upcoming year. Chaponda outlined a series of economic and political difficulties that he believes will make it hard for Malawians to forget 2024.

According to Chaponda, Malawi will continue grappling with rising commodity prices, food shortages, fuel scarcity, and a lack of foreign currency. Additionally, the challenges surrounding the Affordable Input Program (AIP) fertilizer subsidy will persist, putting more pressure on the already struggling population.

Chaponda further pointed to the political instability affecting the nation, citing reports of police interference in the freedom of assembly and the harassment of youths involved in protests in Lilongwe. He emphasized that such actions undermine the rights of Malawians and worsen the already difficult situation.

The opposition leader also expressed concerns over the recent plane crash that claimed the life of Saulos Chilima and others, criticizing President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration for a lack of transparency in the investigation.

Looking ahead to the 2025 elections, Chaponda urged Malawians to vote wisely if they hope to see positive change. He emphasized that the country’s future depends on making informed decisions at the ballot box, with the hope that the next leadership will address the numerous challenges facing the country.
