Rovers FC, Super Eagles triumph in district FAM Cup

Rover FC and Super Eagles FC are the champions of district FAM cup in Salima and Nkhotakota respectively played on Saturday and Sunday.

In Salima, Rovers FC thumped Kachulu Stars 2-0 in a match played before a sizeable crowd at Salima primary school ground on Sunday.

Rovers were a goal up 22 minutes after kickoff through Awalu Ali following excellent exchange of passes with fellow striker, Ibu Abula in Kachulu’s half.

In a space of three minutes after the first goal, Rovers extended the lead to 2 through Adam Amin following a good pass from Shani Kalembo which Amin made no mistake.

Kachulu Stars had a number of scoring opportunities in the early minutes of the first half but had wasted them all.

With two minutes left to the final whistle, Kachulu were awarded a penalty which they missed following Rovers’ goalkeeper Henry Mvula beautiful save.

After the match, Kachulu FC coach, Saidi Kalembo conceded that his charges had not played to his expectation.

“We had a number of scoring opportunities but we had missed them all and that cost us a lot,” he said.

His counterpart, Rovers FC coach, Muhammad Stambuli commended his players for displaying classic football that he said had made them emerge the winners.

In Nkhotakota, Super Eagles beat their rivals Green Rangers 1-0 in a gruelling encounter played at Lozi primary school ground on Saturday.

Eagles scored in the 62th minute through striker Christopher Kajawa and sealed the game at 1-0.

Speaking after the finals, Central Region Football Association Chairperson Austin Ajawa said he was very impressed with the level of skill displayed by young players in the districts.

” Talent identification starts in the districts and we are very much optimistic that these FAM district cups will greatly help in pushing the agenda of transforming the game of football in the region,” said Ajawa.

Speaking in separate interview, Salima district sports officer, Joseph Kaunda said FAM Cups are crucial in promoting football in the country.

“Most of the players that play in superleague teams come from district teams like these through such competition and we would like to ask Football Association of Malawi to continue sponsoring this cup,” he said.
