The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has emphasized the importance of focusing on youth soccer development to achieve its football transformation agenda.
This call comes amidst concerns that district football league clubs are dominated by old players past their prime and social football clubs.
Masiya Nyasulu, a member of FAM’s competitions committee and General Secretary of the Northern Region Football Association (NRFA), made the reminder during the Mzuzu District Football Cup finals.
Representing FAM president Fleetwood Haiya, Nyasulu stressed that players participating in FAM District Cups should be under the age of 21.
“To achieve our football transformation agenda, it is crucial that only players under 21 participate in District FAM leagues,” Nyasulu said.
Alufeyo Deacon Chipanga, an executive committee member of the Malawi National Sports Council, echoed Nyasulu’s sentiments.
“District football formations are essential for identifying and nurturing raw talent, which can be drafted into Super League teams and national teams,” Chipanga said. “Including old players can be seen as a waste of resources.”
Madalitso Chiumia, coach of the champion team Hilltop United, acknowledged that his team had featured old players, arguing that the existing rules did not bar social players during the registration process.
However , Chiumia assured that next season, Hilltop United FC will feature two teams, one in the District football league and the other in the Northern Region Football league premier division.
Hilltop United FC emerged as champions of the Mzuzu District Football Cup, defeating Soweto Giants FC 3-0 to claim the trophy, medals, and top cash prize.
