Activist calls for concerted effort in combating against child abuse

Relantless child rights activist and emerging human rights defender, Memory Chisenga has sounded the alarm on the devastating reality of child abuse in Malawi.

In a powerful media statement, Chisenga urges the nation to unite against this scourge, emphasizing that “child rights are human rights” and it is everyone’s responsibility to protect children from abuse, violence, exploitation, and neglect.

Malawi, once considered a haven for children, has become a breeding ground for heinous crimes against minors.

Chisenga highlights the shocking cases of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse perpetrated by those entrusted with the care and protection of children, including parents, teachers, and religious leaders.

She cited corporal punishment in schools that resulting in life-threatening health conditions for innocent learners.

“Sexual abuse by prophets, churches, and Pentecostal ministries leaving children traumatized and vulnerable. Child neglect in child justice courts where the very institutions meant to protect children are failing them.

“Street-connected children forced to roam the streets without hope or support. Social media exploitation where children are further victimized by influencers and individuals who expose them without proper safeguarding measures,” she said.

Chisenga commends the Malawi Police Service for their efforts in arresting perpetrators but laments the delays and lenient sentences that deny justice to abused children.

She emphasizes that it is time for collective action, stating, “Enough is enough! We must rise against child abuse because the lives of our children depend on it.”

To address these issues, Chisenga announces plans to establish a comprehensive Child Advocacy Centre in Malawi, focusing on child protection services, victim advocacy, counseling, legal services, and empowerment.

As Chisenga so eloquently puts it, “The time has come for all of us to unite against child abuse in Malawi!” It is a call to action that resonates across the nation, urging citizens, leaders, and institutions to join forces in protecting the most vulnerable members of society – Malawi’s children.
