In a major development for Malawian football, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya has announced that former FCB Nyasa Big Bullets coach Kallisto Pasuwa has accepted an offer to become the Flames’ substantive coach.
He said this during an interactive session with football followers on Facebook on Thursday night.
Pasuwa, a Zimbabwean tactician, has been offered a two-year deal, although the contract is yet to be signed. Haiya revealed that the two parties have agreed on the terms, but are still finalizing the details, including perks.
Pasuwa has already chosen his backroom staff, but their identities will be revealed at a later date. FAM is currently in talks with the clubs that own the selected tacticians to finalize the arrangements. Haiya emphasized that FAM will not interfere in the Flames’ player selection, ensuring that Pasuwa has full autonomy in choosing his team.
The FAM boss also outlined the association’s ambitious goals, including qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and subsequent continental finals. To achieve these goals, Haiya stressed the importance of strengthening youth football, particularly with the launch of the Luwimga Inclusive Technical Centre. This initiative is expected to be key in developing quality players for the senior team.
Furthermore, Haiya confirmed that FAM will not hinder foreign-based players with links to Malawi from playing for the Flames. The recent announcement by the Immigration Department to resume providing dual citizenship is expected to facilitate the recruitment of new players.
