Dowa police recover millions’ worth property, arrest refugees for theft

Police in Dowa have recovered property worth of millions of kwachas which was stolen by Dzaleka Camp refugees at the same facility.

The police have since arrested the suspects, comprising of six Congolese nationals and one Rwandan national, who are aged between 10 and 18.

The arrests occurred between February 24 and 25, 2025.

The incidents took place between February 21 and 24, 2025.

During this period, Dzaleka Police Unit received numerous complaints from residents about unknown criminals terrorizing the camp.

In response, officers intensified their day and night patrols and conducted an intelligence-driven operation, leading to the arrest of the suspects.

The suspects are identified as Bonface Fisito, 18, along with six accomplices who are minors.

Upon being interviewed, the suspects admitted to the charges and led the officers to the locations where they had sold the stolen items.

The recovered property includes plasma screens, laptops, cellphones, radios, sub-woofers, clothes, groceries, and various other items valued at approximately K10,700,000.

Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and recover more property.

The seven suspects will soon appear in court to face the charges leveled against them.
