President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has assured families of the departed fallen heroes- people who fought selflessly in the struggle for the country’s independence on 3rd March, 1959 that Government will not leave them alone.

Dr. Chakwera said two years ago, he instructed the Ministry of National Unity to work together with the Ministry of Justice to investigate families of the people who fought gallantly for the country’s independence for them to at least receive compensations.

He said he is aware that there are many families of those selfless people who died while fighting for the country’s independence in all districts across the country with Nkhatabay 31 saying the blood of these people should not go in vain.

Speaking in Nkhatabay when he led the nation in remembering the fallen heroes-people who lost their lives on the 3rd March, 1959 President Chakwera said it is not the Malawi Government that killed the fallen heroes but the British Government saying the compensations is coming from them to the Government of Malawi.

President Chakwera said most of the families of the fallen heroes in the northern region have received their compensations and government is now focusing with the people of the southern and central regions that them also receive their shares.

He said 3rd March, 1959 is always remembered to honor the fallen heroes -those people died fighting for the real change in Malawi saying as a country, this day should be a celebration marking the dawn of change in the country.

President Chakwera said 3rd March, 2025 will be celebrated that there were people who sold their country out of greed and anger saying the spirits of Orton Chirwa, Kanyama Chiume, Henry Masauko Chipembere cannot rest seeing people destroying their own country.

He said it is his wish to see to it that the youth of Malawi come together and finding ways and means of developing their country other than other people to be using them as weapons of violence saying this is not allowed in national building.

He said he feel pity to see Malawians against themselves that the good belong to them only giving example of ADMARC markets where some people are working with greedy people conniving with vendors to buy the whole maize which could have benefited many.

“Some people know the people who are indulging in these bad behaviors but they end up praising them while their friends are in pain,” said President Chakwera.

Speaking earlier, Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda said 61 families of those who died in the struggle for the country’s independence will receive compensations amounting to K15 million each, government has started with 31 of the northern region and the rest will also receive their compensations.
