The Association of the Diocesan Catholic Clergy of Mzuzu has called on President Laazarus Chakwera to intervene on the land wrangle between Malawi Defence Force (MDF) and the people of Kasasire.
At least 800 people have been evicted from Kasasire, an area covering Nkhata Bay district, North East of Mzimba and part of Runphi East.
Speaking during a press briefing today in Mzuzu, chairperson for the association, Father Mark Mkandawire said they have been in talks with the Presidency to meet over the matter.
He said:”These people have no shelter, no food, they lack basic hygiene necessities. What can a poor person do to get justice?
“Discussions are ongoing with the Presidency, and we hope that since he is here in the North, he may find time to see the suffering of the people of Kasasire.”
Felix Manda, who coordinates the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) said the people of Kasasire deserve compensation and human dignity.
