Joseph Mwanamvekha criticizes government over food shortages during relief distribution

By Burnett Munthali

Vice President for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the Southern Region, Joseph Mwanamvekha, has criticized the current administration, stating that if the DPP were in government, there would be an abundance of food supplies by now.

He made these remarks on Saturday 8 March 2025 while leading a food relief distribution exercise in Senior Chief Kadewere’s area.

The event took place at Thumbwe Technical College, where Mwanamvekha distributed essential food items to over 1,200 households.

The relief package included maize flour, salt, soya pieces, and cooking oil, aimed at assisting families struggling with food shortages.

During his address, Mwanamvekha emphasized that the DPP prioritizes food security and would have taken proactive measures to prevent the current crisis.

He argued that had the DPP remained in power, there would be sufficient food supplies across the country.

Mwanamvekha further claimed that his party would have ensured that farmers received adequate fertilizer support to boost agricultural productivity.

He expressed concern that many households are suffering due to the government’s failure to manage food security effectively.

His remarks are likely to fuel further debate over the current administration’s handling of food security and agricultural policies.

Meanwhile, Senior Chief Kadewere has made a direct appeal to both the government and non-governmental organizations for immediate food assistance.

He acknowledged the worsening hunger crisis in his area, stating that many people are struggling to find enough food to eat.

The chief’s plea highlights the urgent need for intervention as hunger continues to affect vulnerable communities.

Food insecurity remains a pressing issue in Malawi, exacerbated by erratic weather patterns, rising food prices, and challenges in the government’s agricultural subsidy programs.

The DPP’s relief efforts come at a time when many Malawians are questioning the government’s response to the worsening food crisis.

Political analysts believe that Mwanamvekha’s remarks signal the DPP’s strategic positioning ahead of the 2025 elections, using food security as a key campaign issue.

As the political debate intensifies, the priority remains ensuring that affected families receive the necessary support to survive the hunger crisis.

Whether through government intervention or private relief efforts, Malawians in affected areas are in desperate need of sustainable solutions to food insecurity.
