A child rights organization, the Centre for Youth and Children’s Affairs (CEYCA), has criticized the authorities for failing to be proactive in addressing children’s welfare.
The organization has expressed concern that the proposed 2025/2026 national budget does not adequately consider children’s needs or provide a clear focus on issues affecting them.
CEYCA argues that while some children’s issues may be indirectly covered in the budget, this is not sufficient to address the challenges faced by children across the country.
The rights group insists that children must be prioritized in national policies, as they are the future of the nation and require direct investments in their well-being.
CEYCA’s Executive Director, Desmond Mhango, has pointed out key areas of concern, particularly in child welfare, education, and protection.
He has stressed that the government must allocate specific resources to improve access to quality education, strengthen child protection mechanisms, and ensure that children’s rights are upheld.
Mhango has warned that neglecting children’s issues in national planning could have long-term consequences for the country’s development, as an unprotected and undereducated generation will struggle to contribute meaningfully to society.
He has called on policymakers to reconsider the budgetary allocations and make deliberate efforts to invest in programs that directly benefit children.
CEYCA has urged the government to consult with child rights organizations and other stakeholders to ensure that children’s needs are adequately addressed in the final budget.
The organization has also encouraged civil society groups and the public to demand accountability from authorities and advocate for a budget that truly reflects the interests of all citizens, including children.
As the budget debate continues, CEYCA remains committed to pushing for policies that protect and promote the rights of children, ensuring that no child is left behind.
