The Presidential Advisor on Creative Industries, Qabaniso Malewezi, has called on Malawian poets to use their craft as a tool to promote unity among citizens.

He made these remarks during the International Poetry Day commemorations held at Jacaranda in Blantyre.

The event also marked the launch of the Post-Pandemic and Disaster Recovery and Management Poetry Collection.

Malewezi emphasized that Malawi faces many divisions that hinder national progress.

He stated that poets have a significant role to play in bridging these divides and fostering a sense of togetherness.

He encouraged poets to use their words to inspire peace, reconciliation, and national cohesion.

According to Malewezi, poetry has the power to shape public discourse and influence society in a positive way.

Meanwhile, President Lazarus Chakwera has shown support for the poetry industry in Malawi.

He has donated K1 million to the Poetry Association of Malawi (PAM) to assist with its operations.

The donation is expected to strengthen the association’s efforts in promoting poetry as a tool for social change.

Speaking on behalf of PAM, Director of Publicity Kenneth Khondiwa expressed gratitude for the president’s support.

He commended President Chakwera for recognizing the role poetry plays in national development.

Khondiwa also urged other individuals and corporate entities to contribute to the growth of the poetry industry.

He highlighted the need for more investment in poetry and creative arts in general.

This year’s International Poetry Day commemoration is being held under the theme: Poetry for Peace, Unity, and Disaster Recovery.

The theme reflects the critical role poetry plays in addressing societal challenges.

It also aligns with the global call for artistic expressions that promote healing and resilience.

As poets gather to celebrate their craft, the emphasis remains on using poetry as a medium to unite Malawians.

Malewezi’s call to action serves as a reminder that poetry is not just an art form but a powerful tool for nation-building.

With continued support from leaders and the private sector, Malawian poets can amplify their voices and contribute to social transformation.
