Opposition leaders urged to speak the truth—Government denies claims that Malawi is broke

By Burnett Munthali

The Government of Malawi has urged opposition leaders to speak only the truth to the Malawian people.

The government says it is not true that Malawi has no money to run its operations, as claimed by some politicians.

Minister of Information and Government Spokesperson, Moses Kumkuyu, made the remarks.

He was speaking during an interview with MBC Digital.

Kumkuyu’s comments follow recent claims by United Democratic Front (UDF) leader Atupele Muluzi that the government is broke.

Muluzi made the claims during a political rally held at Bangwe in the city of Blantyre.

At the rally, he told the audience that the government of Malawi has collapsed because it has no funds to support its daily operations.

However, Kumkuyu has dismissed the statement as false and politically motivated.

He said President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s administration is working hard to restore what the UDF-led government damaged in the past.

Among other things, Kumkuyu mentioned the selling of state-owned companies as one of the mistakes made by the UDF during its time in power.

He stated that the current government aims to develop the country through transparent and inclusive approaches.

Kumkuyu went on to say that spreading false political narratives will not help the country move forward, and leaders have a responsibility to give the public accurate information.

The government believes that although there are economic challenges, efforts are being made to ensure that Malawi does not backslide.

He added that Muluzi’s remarks appear to be an attempt to paint a negative picture of the country’s situation.

According to Kumkuyu, Malawians should be aware that their government is doing its best to manage the situation wisely and responsibly.

He emphasized that politics should be built on truth, not on tactics aimed at misleading the public.

Furthermore, Kumkuyu warned that the government will not allow political platforms to be used to attack leadership with lies.

He concluded by saying opposition leaders must show love for their country by speaking the truth and helping Malawi progress.

The time has come for politics to be grounded in unity, truth, and peace—not lies and discouragement.
