Young innovators shine at Robotics Boot Camp in Blantyre

By Jones Gadama

A robotics boot camp recently held in Blantyre has showcased the creativity and innovative spirit of Malawi’s young people.

The competition, which brought together nine teams of students from 12 schools and tertiary institutions, challenged participants to develop innovative projects that leveraged AI robotics to address climate change and disaster management.

In a surprising turn of events, three teams have tied for first place, impressing judges with their exceptional projects. Initially, the competition was intended to select one winner to participate in a global robotics AI competition.

However, the outstanding performance of the three teams has led to a decision to have them participate in a final robotics camp, where the ultimate winner will be determined on July 25 this year.

The competition involved 62 students aged between 13 and 19, who were tasked with developing innovative solutions to address environmental challenges. One of the standout projects was a robotic tool designed to rescue individuals trapped in floods.

This project demonstrated the potential of AI robotics to save lives and mitigate the impact of disasters.

UN Women Representative, Letty Chiwara, commended the Government of Malawi and its partners for investing in youth innovation and technology. “The future of Malawi lies in these young people,” Chiwara said, adding that,”More investments like this could change the face of Malawi.” Chiwara also praised the young innovators for their creativity and critical thinking in developing solutions for environmental challenges.
