By Burnett Munthali

In an overwhelming display of support, Jomo, popularly known as BT2 and notably without a political classmate, has secured a landslide victory in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) primary elections for Bangwe Ntopwa Ward.

Jomo triumphed over his closest contender, Israel Chinsinga, in a contest that has captured the attention of the local political scene.

His victory is being widely celebrated, especially among grassroots supporters who see him as a relatable and dynamic figure with strong community ties.

The margin of victory indicates the extent of his popularity and the trust that the people of Bangwe Ntopwa have placed in his leadership.

Despite not being a seasoned politician or having held significant public office before, Jomo has managed to rally impressive support through what many describe as authenticity, accessibility, and unwavering determination.

Political observers have noted that his rise is symbolic of a new era in local governance, where voters are increasingly favouring leaders with a proven record of community engagement over traditional political elites.

Jomo’s lack of a political “classmate” is being interpreted as a strength—proof that he is a self-made candidate who has earned his place through merit and direct connection with the electorate.

His competitor, Israel Chinsinga, is a known figure in the area, but this defeat highlights the shifting political loyalties within the DPP base in Bangwe Ntopwa.

This primary win now places Jomo in a strong position to contest for the councillor seat in the upcoming general elections, where he will represent the DPP on the official ballot.

As congratulatory messages pour in from across the region, Jomo has expressed gratitude to the people of Bangwe Ntopwa for the overwhelming mandate they have given him.

He pledged to focus on development initiatives that directly improve the lives of ordinary residents, including improved sanitation, youth empowerment, and small business support.

Jomo’s journey from an underdog to a frontrunner is not just a personal success but a story of how local democracy continues to evolve in Malawi.

With the general elections on the horizon, all eyes will be on Jomo to see if he can transform this primary victory into an official seat on the council.

His supporters believe he will deliver and bring the kind of leadership that speaks to the hopes and aspirations of Bangwe Ntopwa Ward.
