MEC reminds voters: Only one endorsement per candidate allowed ahead of 2025 Elections

By Burnett Munthali

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has intensified its voter education campaign as the country edges closer to the 2025 General Election scheduled for 16th September.

According to an official notice shared by MEC, there are now only 120 days remaining until voters cast their ballots on 19th May 2025.

This countdown is part of MEC’s broader effort to engage the electorate and ensure that citizens are informed and prepared for the voting process.

A key highlight in the latest communication from MEC is the emphasis on nomination guidelines, especially the requirement for voter endorsement.

MEC has clarified that during nomination, each registered voter is allowed to endorse only one candidate for each electoral position.

These positions include the President, Member of Parliament, and Ward Councillor.

The Commission further specified that for endorsements at the constituency or ward level—such as Members of Parliament and Ward Councillors—the endorsing voter must be a registered voter in that specific constituency or ward.

This rule is designed to uphold the integrity and credibility of the nomination process.

It ensures that only those with a genuine stake in a particular area can influence who stands for election there.

MEC has urged voters to stay actively engaged and to safeguard their voter certificates throughout the electoral process.

The Commission also continues to champion the message: “Your Vote, Your Right, Your Choice,” emphasizing the power and responsibility that comes with casting a vote.

This campaign serves not only to inform but also to remind citizens of the legal and procedural frameworks that guide Malawi’s democratic process.

By setting clear expectations early, MEC aims to reduce confusion, prevent violations, and promote orderly nominations and elections.

As the election date approaches, such public information efforts are crucial in fostering transparency, accountability, and voter confidence.

Ultimately, the success of the 2025 General Election depends not just on the Commission’s preparations, but also on the awareness and participation of every Malawian voter.
