Inspector General of Police Merlyn Yolamu has announced that investigations into the burning of a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vehicle in Mponela have been concluded.

Yolamu stated that Malawians will be surprised by the findings once arrests begin for individuals suspected to be involved in the incident.

She indicated that the outcome of the investigation differs from public speculation, particularly from those who rushed to the media claiming they were victims of political persecution.

“You will be surprised by the results of our investigation. Some people rushed to the airwaves to claim they were being politically harassed,” Yolamu remarked.

Her comments were made during the Public Affairs Committee (PAC) conference currently taking place in Blantyre.

The incident, which sparked political tension and allegations of targeted violence, had drawn widespread attention, prompting calls for thorough and impartial investigation.

Yolamu’s remarks signal a possible shift in the narrative as the Malawi Police Service prepares to take legal action based on their findings.

As the country edges closer to the 2025 elections, issues of political violence and security continue to be a major concern for stakeholders, including law enforcement.
