CDEDI demands answers from government on Chilima plane crash report

By Burnett Munthali

The Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI) is pressing the government for answers regarding the investigation into the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of former Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others last year.

CDEDI is specifically directing its concerns to Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu, demanding that he reveal the status of the investigation report.

The organization believes that the government has a responsibility to update the public on the findings of the investigation, given the magnitude of the tragedy.

Speaking during a press briefing held in Lilongwe, CDEDI executive director Sylvester Namiwa stressed the need for clarity and transparency.

He stated that the people of Malawi deserve to know the truth about what happened, especially when the lives of senior government officials and other citizens were lost.

Namiwa emphasized that withholding such information only fuels public speculation and mistrust in government institutions.

He reminded authorities that in a democratic society, accountability is not optional, especially in matters involving national tragedies.

CDEDI further argued that the government’s silence is undermining efforts to uphold public confidence in both the aviation sector and the current administration.

According to the organization, it is unacceptable for the nation to remain in the dark so long after such a significant incident.

Namiwa said that failure to release the report would only validate public suspicion that there may be attempts to conceal the truth.

CDEDI is therefore urging the government to urgently release the investigation findings or at least provide a comprehensive update on the progress made.

The organization concluded by warning that continued silence could provoke further public outcry and calls for independent investigations.
