The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) has officially distanced itself from recent remarks made by its Vice President Operations, Comrade Timothy Mtambo, during a public interview.
Tonic Nyakamutu Dossi, who serves as AFORD’s National Campaign Director, issued a statement to clarify the party’s position in response to the backlash that followed Mtambo’s comments.
According to Dossi, the statements made by Mtambo during the interview do not represent the official stance of the party.
He emphasized that the views expressed were either personal opinions or connected to the Citizens for Transformation (CFT) movement, which Mtambo leads, rather than being endorsed by AFORD.
Dossi further stated that the AFORD National Executive Committee (NEC) has not convened or discussed any of the issues Mtambo raised in the said interview.
This clarification appears aimed at quelling growing concerns within the party and among the public about Mtambo’s alignment with AFORD’s core values and collective decisions.
The statement has come at a time when internal tensions seem to be rising within the party over questions of leadership accountability and message discipline.
It remains unclear whether any disciplinary actions will follow, but the party’s leadership has clearly taken steps to dissociate itself from unapproved political statements.
The development underscores the importance of internal coherence and unified messaging ahead of Malawi’s 2025 General Elections.
AFORD, one of Malawi’s oldest political parties, has been working to rebrand and reposition itself within the national political landscape.
With such statements now under scrutiny, the party may face increased pressure to strengthen communication channels and enforce discipline among its senior members.
