Social media platforms have been awash with breaking news claims suggesting that Timothy Mtambo, former Minister of Civic Education and National Unity, has left the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) to join the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
The viral message further alleged that Mtambo would be officially welcomed into the MCP after the funeral proceedings of the late Joyce Chitsulo are concluded.
The message, which carries the hashtag #PalibeChinsinsi (Nothing is secret), has stirred public debate and confusion about Mtambo’s political standing and future direction.
However, when contacted to verify the authenticity of the claims, Timothy Mtambo swiftly and strongly dismissed the rumours.
In a direct response, Mtambo branded the circulating message as “nonsense propaganda,” clearly expressing his frustration and disapproval.
He went further to question the logic behind the alleged defection, rhetorically asking, “Why should I?”
This strong denial from Mtambo serves to clarify the misinformation circulating online and reaffirms his current political stance, as he has not announced any change of party affiliation.
The incident reflects a growing trend of unverified political claims being spread through social media platforms in Malawi, especially in the buildup to elections.
It also underscores the importance of cross-checking facts with credible sources before consuming or sharing potentially misleading information.
As it stands, Timothy Mtambo remains a member of AFORD, and no official statement has been made to suggest any shift in his political allegiance.
