President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on Tuesday joined thousands of Malawians at Lunjika Turn Off in Mzimba for a solemn memorial service to mark one year since the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of former Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others.
The event, attended by citizens from all walks of life, served as a national moment of remembrance and reflection.
President Chakwera led the wreath-laying ceremony, paying tribute to each of the nine victims at the crash site.
In his speech, President Chakwera called for unity and respect during the time of mourning, urging the public to refrain from politicizing the tragic loss.
He emphasized the importance of allowing bereaved families to grieve without provocation.
The President also pledged to address the challenges faced by the affected families and announced that the new six lane road under construction in Lilongwe will be named in honour of Dr. Chilima.
Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda, commended President Chakwera for his commitment to honouring the departed.
Among the dignitaries present were Vice President Dr. Michael Bizwick Usi, Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotani Hara, Malawi Defence Force Commander Dr. Paul Valentino Phiri, and Secretary to the President and Cabinet Colleen Zamba.
