Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) President Enock Chihana has declared that his party is open to forming a political alliance with any party that shares AFORD’s core ideologies, as Malawi moves closer to the crucial September general elections.

Speaking during a political rally held this afternoon at Mgona Ground in Lilongwe, Chihana stressed that his party is prioritizing partnerships that place the welfare of Malawians first. He warned that AFORD would not entertain alliances driven by political convenience or personal gain.
“We are willing to work with any party that truly aligns with our values and puts the people of Malawi at the center of their agenda,” said Chihana, addressing a crowd of supporters. “But let me be clear—I will not be fooled again.”
The AFORD leader openly criticized his past involvement in the Tonse Alliance during the 2020 fresh presidential elections, calling it a “mistake” that undermined the interests of the people. Without naming specific individuals, Chihana alleged that he was misled into joining the coalition, which ultimately did not uphold the promises made to Malawians.
“I was tricked in 2020 into joining an alliance that did not deliver what it promised to the people. I will not make that mistake again,” he said firmly.
Chihana further stated that should no suitable political partner emerge, AFORD is ready to contest the elections independently.
“If we don’t find a party that respects and supports our ideologies, we will go to the polls alone—and win,” he declared, drawing applause from the crowd.
AFORD is among the oldest political parties in Malawi’s multiparty era and has been working to rebuild its influence in recent years. With the political landscape heating up ahead of the elections, all eyes will be on how parties like AFORD position themselves in potential coalitions or solo campaigns.
