Atupele Muluzi Dismisses Alliance Rumours with MCP, Confirms 2025 Presidential Bid

Blantyre, Malawi – United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi has firmly denied reports suggesting that his party has entered into an electoral alliance with the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP), calling the rumors baseless and politically motivated.

Speaking during an exclusive interview on Times TV, Muluzi addressed the swirling speculation that he is poised to become running mate to President Lazarus Chakwera in the upcoming 2025 general elections. He made it clear that no such discussions have ever taken place.

“I have not met President Chakwera to talk about any alliance, nor has there been any negotiation between the UDF and MCP regarding such matters,” said Muluzi. “These are fabrications, mostly coming from elements within the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), who have been unsettled since I made it clear during our 2024 convention that the UDF would not play second fiddle to any party.”

Muluzi emphasized that the UDF is preparing to contest the 2025 elections independently and that his name will be on the presidential ballot.

“I will be presenting my nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) between the 24th and 30th of July this year,” he declared.

The UDF leader also stated that the party is currently finalizing its campaign strategy and manifesto, which he says will focus on addressing economic hardship, youth unemployment, and restoring confidence in national leadership.

As the 2025 polls approach, the political atmosphere in Malawi continues to heat up, with parties positioning themselves and forging alliances. However, Muluzi’s remarks appear to set the tone for a solo UDF campaign aimed at returning the party to the political forefront.

The UDF, once a dominant force under former President Bakili Muluzi, is seeking a major comeback under Atupele’s leadership, with a promise to offer a “new generation” of governance.
