As Malawi prepares for a transformative new chapter after the 16th of September 2025, the United Transformation Movement (UTM) has unveiled a bold and ambitious agricultural vision that promises to revolutionize the country’s economy and livelihoods from the ground up.
Dubbed “The 3rd Revolution in Agriculture: From the Soil to the Supermarket,” this plan is more than just a policy—it is a national rebirth for agriculture, engineered to lift Malawi from subsistence farming to a modern, tech-driven, value-added economy that feeds the nation, drives exports, and creates jobs.
A MK500 Billion Investment in the Future
At the heart of this revolution is a significant MK500 billion annual investment into agriculture and value-addition industries. According to UTM leadership, this injection will stimulate production, modernize farming practices, and create a vibrant ecosystem that links the farmer to the factory—and ultimately, to the supermarket.
“We are moving from poverty to prosperity. From exporting raw groundnuts to exporting peanut butter. From selling tomatoes on the roadside to producing world-class tomato paste right here in Malawi,” said a UTM spokesperson.
Smart Farming for Greater Yields
The transformation will begin with the land itself. UTM envisions Smart Farming—where every seed is sown with science and every harvest is optimized for market value. This includes:
- Advanced soil management and climate-resilient practices
- Tailor-made seed varieties suited to Malawi’s various regions
- Precision agriculture tools and affordable mechanization to empower both smallholder and commercial farmers
- Digital tools for weather alerts, extension services, and connecting farmers directly to buyers
Value Addition: Turning Crops into Gold
Unlike in the past where Malawi exported raw crops and imported finished products at high costs, the 3rd Revolution will ensure that the country adds value locally—generating more income, employment, and national pride.
Under this plan, Malawi will establish agro-processing zones across the country, producing a range of goods including:
- Tomato paste, cooking oil, fruit juices, animal feed, flour, and ethanol
- Organic fertilizers, biomass energy, and textiles from cotton and other crops
This industrial approach will spark a nationwide value chain—From Farm to Factory to Fortune.
Job Creation, Empowerment, and Economic Growth
