Police Yet to Arrest Suspects in Lilongwe Demonstration Violence

The Malawi Police Service has confirmed that no arrests have been made so far in connection with the violence that erupted during Wednesday’s demonstrations in Lilongwe, but assured the public that investigations are currently underway.

Speaking to the media, Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya defended the conduct of officers during the protests, stating that law enforcers responded by firing tear gas to disperse violent groups and took action to protect innocent citizens from being harmed.

“It is not true that police officers stood by and did nothing. Our officers were on the ground, doing everything they could to restore order and prevent further attacks,” Kalaya said.

He further cautioned against politicizing the role of the police, especially as the country draws closer to general elections.

“As we head towards the polls, it is important that citizens and political actors refrain from unfairly blaming the police. Everyone has a responsibility to ensure peace and stability in the country,” he added.

The demonstrations, organized to protest various governance issues, turned chaotic when unknown individuals wielding dangerous weapons attacked some of the participants, prompting widespread condemnation from civil society and political observers.

Police have pledged to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice.
