The Malawi Police Service has been named as the most corrupt institution in a study by Afrobarometer, a result police have declined to issue an immediate comment on. The study results which was presented in Lilongwe today has shown that Police top the chat of most corrupt institutions with NGOs, MRA, Civil Servants and Members of Parliament among those on the list. But police Harry Namwaza, deputy national police spokesperson has said that they will make an immediate comment until they are served with the report. Namwaza has since said the police continues to encourage people to report any forms of corruption to authorities. Police officers been called upon to refrain from corruption and mistreating of suspects as it fuels loss of public trust, leading to rise in cases of mob justice and vandalism of the police stations during public demonstrations. Eastern Region Community Policing Coordinator, Superintendent Memory Mgeni made the call on Monday during an elective meeting of Liwonde Police Station Executive Committee. Mgeni says the malpractice damages the reputation of their department. Newly elected Chairperson for the committee, Elias Ngomano says he will focus on strengthening the relationship between the two sides for a successful implementation of security policies.

The Malawi Police Service-MPS has emphasized on the need for collaborative efforts in dealing with Gender Based Violence in evacuation camps in the areas affected by cyclones. Deputy Director of Community Policing Services and Rural Police Units, Francis Chisaka at Mulanje police made the sentiments when he visited flood survivors at Mitawa Primary School camp in Mulanje district. Chisaka warned that Police will arrest anyone taking advantage of the situation to abuse people especially women and girls. During the visit, Chisaka also handed over reflective jackets to community policing members and a suggestion box for the people to use in registering their concerns at the camp. This follows a public uproar over pictures of new police recruits, who members of the public argue look very young and immature for law enforcement responsibilities.
