Aspiring parliamentary candidate for Lilongwe Mpenu Constituency under the Odya Zake Alibe Mlandu party, Beauty Kumtomoni, has appealed to authorities to introduce strong measures to protect women from violence and political harassment during the election campaign period.
Speaking at a meeting organized by UN Women in Lilongwe for female aspirants ahead of the forthcoming elections, Kumtomoni stressed that violence and intimidation against women in politics remain major obstacles to their participation in leadership.
“I am determined to contest and win despite facing politicians who have been in the game for years. However, we need to ensure that the campaign environment is safe for every woman willing to serve this country,” Kumtomoni said.
She also underscored the importance of creating legal and social safeguards that would shield women candidates from threats and abuse.
On her part, UN Women Malawi Representative, Letty Chawara, said the growing interest among women to contest for political positions is encouraging. She called on stakeholders to support female candidates and foster public trust in their leadership.
“It’s not just about increasing numbers but creating an environment where women can participate freely and fairly,” Chawara said.
The meeting was part of UN Women’s ongoing efforts to promote gender equality in political representation ahead of Malawi’s elections.
