Malawi Voice accuses MBC of misleading public on fuel shipment ahead of 2025 Elections

By Burnett Munthali

Malawi Voice has accused the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and its associates of lying to Malawians about the transportation of fuel ahead of the highly anticipated 2025 general elections.

According to Malawi Voice, MBC recently reported that the vessel MV Virgo was carrying Malawian fuel to the port of Tanga in Tanzania.

However, Malawi Voice claims to have tracked the vessel’s actual route and discovered that the information shared by MBC is false.

The publication reports that MV Virgo is currently en route to the port of Saldanha Bay in South Africa, not Tanga as earlier stated.

The vessel is reportedly sailing at a speed of 12.8 knots and is expected to arrive in Saldanha Bay on July 20 at 04:30.

This revelation has raised concerns about misinformation and transparency regarding fuel supply in Malawi, particularly at a time when the country continues to face persistent fuel shortages.

Critics argue that spreading false information about fuel imports could be a deliberate attempt to influence public opinion ahead of the upcoming elections.

The controversy has also sparked debate on social media, with many Malawians demanding honesty from state-owned institutions and media houses about the status of fuel availability.

Observers note that misinformation on such a critical issue could further erode public trust in state institutions and worsen the already tense political atmosphere.

As of now, MBC has not issued any response to the allegations raised by Malawi Voice, leaving Malawians with more questions than answers about the real status of fuel imports.

The incident underscores the urgent need for accurate, verifiable information as the nation heads toward one of its most closely watched elections in history.
