As the political atmosphere intensifies ahead of the September 16 elections, the Rastafarian community in Malawi has stepped forward with a message of unity, calm, and peace.

Speaking during a special gathering at the Namilongo Temple in Zomba, the spokesperson for the Nyahbinghi National Council of Malawi Rastafari (NNC), Sister Lindiwe Matola, urged Malawians to prioritize peace as they prepare to cast their votes. She emphasized that during such politically charged times, it is vital for citizens and leaders alike to promote tolerance and national unity.

“This is not the time for violence or division. It is the time for us as Malawians to come together in love and harmony as we shape the future of our country,” said Matola.

The gathering is part of a 7-day national celebration to commemorate the birthday of Emperor Haile Selassie I, a central spiritual figure in the Rastafarian faith, who was born on July 23, 1892. The event has drawn hundreds of Rastafarians from all corners of Malawi.

Other key figures present include Raphael Ital Lungu, deputy spokesperson of the Nyahbinghi Council, and Free I Mdutu, the council’s chairperson. Both echoed Matola’s sentiments, stressing the importance of peaceful engagement throughout the electoral process.

“We are here not only to celebrate our Emperor’s legacy but also to stand as an example of peace and unity during this important time for Malawi,” said Lungu.

The celebration continues throughout the week, culminating in a major commemoration from August 1 to 3, when the Rastafarian community will mark the 60th anniversary of Emperor Haile Selassie’s historic visit to Malawi on August 2, 1965.

The Rastafarian community has long been an advocate for peace and spiritual consciousness, and through this gathering, they hope to inspire a spirit of respect, coexistence, and responsible citizenship as Malawians prepare to vote.
