LILONGWE, Malawi — Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Commander General George Jafu has openly acknowledged that military leaders face significant political pressure from politicians, saying it requires maturity, professionalism and strong leadership to withstand such influence.

Jafu made the remarks while appearing before the Parliamentary Ad-hoc Committee, where members sought clarification on the relationship between political leaders and the military command structure.Malawi politicians prioritizes winning elections over truth

Responding to a question from Committee Chairperson Walter Nyamilandu Manda on whether politicians exert pressure on MDF officers, particularly considering that military commanders are appointed by politicians and work closely with elected officials, Jafu admitted that the challenge is real and persistent.

“The pressure is there and it is too much. Politicians just have to. I am just being honest. When you wake up in the morning you even get a headache,” said Jafu.

He further explained that while political pressure is unavoidable, military leaders must exercise wisdom and professionalism when handling such situations.Chaponda claims MCP politicians’ hijacks food distribution exercise

“We face these things but you just have to be mature. But it all depends on how you deal with them,” he added.

Rare Admission from Malawi’s Top Military Officer

The comments represent one of the rare public acknowledgements by a serving MDF Commander regarding the extent of political influence and pressure faced by senior military officers.

The Malawi Defence Force is constitutionally mandated to remain professional, non-partisan and subordinate to civilian authority. However, debates have often emerged regarding the relationship between political leaders and security institutions, especially during periods of political transition, elections and national crises.

Nyamilandu Manda’s question highlighted longstanding public concerns about whether political considerations influence decision-making within the military hierarchy.

While acknowledging the pressure, Jafu emphasized that the ultimate responsibility lies with military leaders to uphold professional standards and make decisions that serve the national interest rather than political interests.

Importance of Professionalism in the Malawi Defence Force

Analysts say General Jafu’s remarks underscore the delicate balance that military commanders must maintain between cooperating with elected governments and safeguarding the operational independence of the defence force.
