Mwenefumbo Back in the Race: NDP Leader Submits Presidential Papers Amid Alliance Doubts

By Suleman Chitera

In a dramatic political twist, National Development Party (NDP) president Frank Mwenefumbo has officially joined the 2025 presidential race, citing disunity among opposition parties as a key reason for his surprise move.

Speaking to journalists in Lilongwe after submitting his nomination papers, Mwenefumbo expressed concern over the fragmented state of the opposition, warning that it could lead to a runoff election.

“I believe a strong opposition alliance is still possible, but we need to correct some mistakes before it’s too late,” he said.

Mwenefumbo also raised eyebrows with revelations about his alliance with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), stating he was not given the chance to read the contents of their agreement before being asked to sign it.

Despite stepping back into the race, Mwenefumbo insists the door remains open for collaboration—if parties can return to the table with transparency and mutual respect.

With political alliances hanging by a thread and the September 16 elections fast approaching, Mwenefumbo’s bold comeback may just shift the dynamics of Malawi’s presidential showdown.
