Lilongwe, Malawi — Chaos erupted today at Thanzi Chicks Limited’s farm in M’bwatalika, Lilongwe, after an angry mob looted over 10,000 chickens and vandalized property worth more than K500 million.
The violence was triggered by the discovery of a dead body near the farm’s fence. Though the incident was unrelated to the business, furious villagers stormed the premises, tearing down fences and wreaking havoc.
Managing Director Raj Munangi said police were called immediately, but by the time they arrived, about 200 people had already broken in. A second wave of looters from neighboring villages followed, causing further destruction.
Namitete Police Station Officer Sophie Mgundadzuwa confirmed the incident, stating that 24 people—including two minors—have been arrested and transferred to Lilongwe Police Station.
This isn’t the first time the farm has faced such unrest. In January, it was the target of similar attacks linked to conflicts with local chiefs demanding allowances, free chickens, and access to manure.
Munangi has now called on authorities to act swiftly, warning that lawlessness is threatening the future of investment in Malawi. “We’ve invested over K24 billion and employ more than 300 people. If investors are not protected, the economy suffers,” he said.
